In the last few years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has twice called psilocybin therapy a breakthrough therapy. Thus the FDA wanted to force trials of psilocybin as a treatment for severe depressive disorder because in some cases patients develop resistance to antidepressants. Also, several preliminary studies have found that a certain dosage of psilocybin mushrooms helps cancer patients cope with anxiety.
